Concrete Masonry – Modern And Economical

Masonry as history knows it, makes use of blocks of cut stones such as granite, marble and travertine. Also in use centuries ago are man-made blocks made of clay. While these are ideal in most applications, they are not the most economical or the easiest to work with. In fact, these blocks can be pretty expensive.

Strength Of Structure

Alright, so it is the more economical choice in masonry right? But how about the strength, is it still up to the task? As you know, it is quite common that cheaper alternatives are also less durable and less durable. Is this also true for concrete masonry?

Well, it is not necessarily the case. Concrete masonry is widely used worldwide and the strength it provides on structures is commendable. In fact, depending on the type of concrete block used, a wall or floor made with concrete blocks can withstand 1,000 up to 5,000 psi.

Therefore, concrete masonry can safely be called the modern version of the traditional one. It is still up to the task when it comes to strength and it is economical as well.

Different Kinds Of Masonry: Differences And Their Applications

Masonry is an ancient art of structure-making that makes use of stone blocks or blocks of bricks and binds them together with a strong glue to form a wall, flooring, or any other architectural structure. But there are many branches of masonry that exists. Here are some the most common ones:

Stone Masonry

This is one of the oldest forms of masonry along with brick masonry. As its name implies, this method makes use of real and naturally existing stones. These stone are extracted from their natural source and are cut to meet measurement requirements. Instead of using naturally existing stones however, brick masonry makes use of man-made blocks. These are usually made of clay. These blocks are hardened by baking them in a large clay oven or by letting them dry under the sunlight.

Concrete Masonry

This is a modern day masonry which also makes use of a modern material. Instead of the traditional clay brick and blocks of stones, concrete masonry uses a hallow block made from a mixture of cement, crushed gravel, and sand. A low density and economical version which is made of industrial waste also exists.

The advantage of concrete masonry is that it is more cost-effective. And because it is hallow, it also provides good insulation. It also finds use in many applications. It is used for homes, buildings, and outdoor structures.

Veneer Masonry

Traditional masonry including stone, brick, and concrete masonry finds application in building structures that possesses structural strength. What these methods produce are the walls themselves. In veneer masonry however, the work is simply for the sake of aesthetics.

In veneer masonry, there is an already existing wall. Using this wall as the base, new blocks are put into place and thus covering up the original wall. This is done simply to make the wall more beautiful. It is highly decorative in nature.

Dry Set Masonry

In all types of masonry, a sealing or a bonding agent is used in order to hold the block pieces together. In dry set masonry, there is no mortar used. The wall or structure is made simply of blocks of stones.

This technique takes advantage of the natural shape and surface structure of the stones used. In this type of masonry, the friction between the stones is the one that provides a strong grip that holds the stones together. Sometimes, grooves are carved on the stones to increase the friction.
